About This Project

The goal of GlobalPestInfo is to serve international agricultural pest management professionals, growers, and other stakeholders by providing data, information, software tools, and knowledge.

We hope to reach this goal through the following activities:
    Work with IPM CRSP's Regional and Global Theme projects in specific geographic areas and topics;
    Build capacity in using information technology for pest management in developing countries;
    Acquire data and information in targeted geographical areas, pest groups, and commodities;
    Develop pest management related databases and information systems; and
    Develop software tools for pest information acquisition, delivery, and display.
Substantial progress has been made since the project began. Highlights include:
    Development of an automated global pest news retrieval and delivery software called "PestNewsViewer". This software can get news feeds from more than 50 major pest information and general news providers such as IPPC (International Plant Protection Convention) and AfricaNews every 30 minutes. The selected news are geocoordinated on a dynamic map, and delivered to the subscribed users and the general public.
    Collection of pest management online resources and development of more than 15 specific databases. For example, the pest biological control resource database contains 1,275 vetted online resources in biological control. Our Cocoa Pod Borer (CPB) literature database (Partners: Bogor Agricultural University, Indonesia, Clemson University) is possibly the most comprehensive literature database for the pest. CPB is the most devastating cocoa insect pest, Additionally, we have a database with an extensive collection of pest management web resources in the U.S.
    Partnered with Penn State and the the Rural Agricultural Development Authority, Jamaica in developing a pilot project called Caribbean PestWatch. This capacity building project is for dynamic spatial data acquisition and visualization by mapping pest presence, density and activity of Anastrepha spp. fruit flies. We have also developed another software tool called PestMapper which takes spatical data, and maps it interactively.
    Collaborating with our partners, both in the U.S. and the host countries, we developed region-specific and country-specific pest management information systems such as the West Africa Regional IPM Network and the Southeast Asia IPM Network.
    Trained host countries professionals in using information technology for pest management purposes. For instance, we conducted a two day training session in online pest identifications and database on South East Asian LOOP of BioNET International in 2006.

For detail information about this program and progress, please read this PDF presentation.

These achievements can not be possibly without collaboration and contributions from our U.S. and international partners. Please click on 'Partners' on the top of this page for details.

Since this site is still under development, it is expected that some of the features may not yet be fully functional, and additional databases and links are being added as rapidly as possible. We ask your patience, and your advice.
